Bush wants offshore drilling, so McCain now wants offshore drilling.

McCain says the coastal drilling will help in the "short term." But, he's making that up. Via The Gavel, we learn that the U.S. Department of Energy doesn't see it that way:
“The projections in the OCS [Outer Continental Shelf] access case indicate that access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Gulf regions would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030. …”2030 isn't quite the "short term." If we had a national energy strategy, we should be able to develop alternative sources of energy and much, much better fuel efficiency by then.
